California Native Plants for Springtime Blooms
What’s blooming in your spring garden? California native plants are a great way to use less irrigation in our gardens, create habitat, and add gorgeous flowers.

Ribes sanguineum (Pink Flowering Currant) is a magnet for hummingbirds when in bloom. Other native birds love the currant berries that follow.

Lilac Verbena (Verbena lilacina) blooms much of the year, with the biggest show from spring-summer. Butterflies adore this one too!

Carpenteria californica (Bush Anemone) blooms spring and summer

Ceanothus (Wild Lilac) fragrant blooms late winter and spring. Varieties come in many shades of blue that bees adore.

Monkeyflower (Diplacus spp) is adored by hummingbirds and butterflies. Varieties available in gold, yellow, pink, red and white.

Foothill Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus) is adored by hummingbirds as well. Ranging from blue to purple, Penstemon is covered in blooms in spring and summer.

Heuchera maxima (Alum Root) is great under oak trees. Its creamy pink flower spikes attract hummingbirds spring to summer, and the flowers are great in arrangements too.

Wildflowers like this Lacy Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) make great annual additions to the garden. This one is a great companion plant, attracts pollinators, and is an excellent cut flower for bouquets!

Lupines! Another great annual wildflower for creating a super-bloom in your home garden (bushier perennial species are available as well). Lupines attract pollinators, and being part of the legume family, they have the added benefit of being able to fix nitrogen in the soil.

California native irises make elegant spring flowers in combinations of purple, lilac, white and yellow. They’re great under oak trees and shadier spots in the garden.

Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea) is true to its name and draws hummers to its sweet magenta flower spikes. Amazing fragrance, the leaves can be used in tea. Blooms spring and summer.

Ah, the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica). This patch is growing under a row of fruit trees, bringing in pollinators and bright orange cheer. Blooming spring, summer and sometimes fall as well.
