About the founder:

Marie Haka is a sustainable landscape designer, organic gardener, permaculture consultant, artist and earth-lover who started Earth Design Gardens in 2018. She believes in lifelong learning and often attends workshops and classes to strengthen her skills and build new ones. A snapshot of her educational background includes:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Santa Cruz (2008)
  • Certified Green Gardener from Watershed Watch (2015 – Present)
  • Permaculture Design Certificate from Earth Activist Training (2018)
  • Associate of Science degree in Environmental Horticulture & Design from Foothill College (2021)

Prior to working in sustainable landscaping, Marie worked as a Technical Solutions Consultant in the software industry. While volunteering at the Alemany Farm in San Francisco, she realized it was time to put her creative problem solving skills toward creating and restoring healthy environments. Marie then spent a year traveling, volunteering and studying with various permaculture projects and organic farms throughout Central and South America. She then worked as a landscape designer and garden coordinator for California Nativescapes, a landscape contractor focusing on California native plant restoration and sustainable landscaping.
